Only 2nd Duathlon of the year for me and first attempt at standard distance (10k/40k/5k). Goal was simply to qualify for next years Euros. With very little run training I knew I would be relying on my bike split, but after picking up a cold in the lead up, I felt anything but race ready. I just felt ill.
I watched pretty much the whole field run away from me in the first run but kept my cool and focused on getting to the bike in one piece. The bike course was 9 laps of a circuit but no need to count, my garmin would tell me distance… Well it would if I’d changed it from indoor training mode.. FAIL!! So I spent 5 of the 9 laps trying to work out how many were left. If I did too little I’d be DQ’d. The mental faffing meant I took my eye off the ball. In fact I laughed to myself and had a bit of banter with some of my friends spectating…. It’s only a race right!? Going into T2 I was confident I’d overtaken as many as I could and was pretty much on my own for the final run so just ticked over (amazingly managing a negative split). I finished smiling… happy to be back racing and having had a solid first standard distance race plus a qualification place. Goal achieved.
Thanks for all your support Matthew Bottrill I’m already twitching at the prospect of Worlds and Euros next season.
